A riverfront château stay where views, polish, and attentive concierges keep a very high guest score humming.

The public rooms are where this Manoir shows off. The lobby opens like a stage set — height, soft light, seating that invites you to linger with a book you will not finish. Corridors stretch with that old-hotel confidence, and every turn seems to offer another window onto the St. Lawrence. I kept finding reasons to pause: a chair with a view, a quiet alcove, the low murmur of other travellers planning whale-watching mornings.

For my own trip the location was a gift. La Malbaie puts you in Charlevoix without forcing a downtown scramble; I used the hotel as a base for river light in the morning and long, unhurried evenings. Everything I needed was either on the property or a short, scenic hop away, so the stay never felt stranded or overly orchestrated.

Coming up the drive

Arrival is pure theatre. The approach lifts the château against the river, copper-green roofs catching September sun, and the entrance absorbs you into a hush that still feels celebratory. First impression: this is a building that knows it is the main character, and somehow that does not tip into coldness.

What surprised me most was how quickly the scale became personal. Grand hotels can feel like museums you sleep in; here the staff folded me into the rhythm so gently that the vastness felt protective rather than distant. The bed was the deep, serious kind guests rave about — I understood the “very very comfy” comments by the second night.

Was it worth it, in the qualitative sense? Absolutely, for a celebration weekend or a reset with views that keep rewriting the horizon. The property delivers the five-star promise through atmosphere and care more than through checklist bragging.

One small staff moment sticks: I asked the concierge for a quieter breakfast timing because I wanted the river terrace light without the rush. He did not recite a script. He sketched a window that worked for my schedule, noted a corner table preference, and checked the next morning that I had found it. That is the difference between trained hospitality and someone who actually enjoys the work.

Leaving the river

Checkout was smooth, almost ceremonious without being slow. Walking out, the last impression was the same as the first: water light on the façade, a sense that the building would keep hosting other people’s best weekends after mine. I looked back once from the drive and felt the good kind of envy for whoever was checking in next.

Morning

Breakfast

Breakfast for me was less about inventory and more about pace: soft morning light, the low clink of service, and the feeling that the day could start without hurry. I ate simply, watched the river brighten, and left the dining room already planning a slow walk rather than a checklist.

Seasons

When to go

La Malbaie and the Charlevoix shore change character through the year. Summer and early autumn tend to feel busier — longer days, more travellers collecting river views — while late autumn through early spring usually reads quieter, with more room to hear the property’s own rhythm. Either stretch suits a Manoir stay; choose based on whether you want company in the public rooms or a more hushed corridor.

Busier

Warmer months and early autumn, when the river light draws more weekend travellers and the hotel feels festive.

Quieter

Late autumn into early spring, when the grounds soften and evenings feel more private.

Night notes

The evening rhythm

Evenings here are about the river’s slow fade and the hotel’s warm interior glow answering it. I walked the public spaces after dinner, listened to low conversation rather than nightlife clamour, and ended on a quiet stretch of corridor where the windows held the last blue of the water. It felt ceremonial and restful at once — the sort of night that makes you grateful you did not overpack the itinerary.

Reading the score

4.5
Guest rating out of 5
4324 reviews

A 4.5 drawn from thousands of reviews typically signals a property that delights often and disappoints rarely. In the guest notes we gathered, views, attentive service, and comfortable rooms push the score upward; dietary limits at the breakfast buffet and the inevitable busy arrival moments keep it from reading as flawless. The meters below are our editorial sense of those themes — not official hotel sub-scores.

We stayed one night at the Fairmont. It was an amazing experience. The room is super clean and tidy, and smells fresh. The bed is very very comfy. Compared with the other hotel we stayed at two days before the Fairmont, the one we stayed at was horrible; we could not sleep that night. The bathroom is shiny and clean. The only thing I can say negatively, is that we follow a certain food restriction, and when we checked the buffet for breakfast, we could not find a lot of choices for us, so we had breakfast somewhere else. The Fairmont is pricy, that's true, but we waited for an offer and we booked the room, and what we got is an unforgettable experience.

It is an amazing hotel a little bit busy when we arrived, but overall experience was rewarding. The location is absolutely gorgeous. Overlooking the river and the Landscape is also neat. I recommend this hotel for a weekend of relaxation.

The property itself is stunning, with breathtaking views and a unique historic charm. The room was comfortable, clean, and well maintained, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was both relaxing and elegant.
